Queen vs. King vs. California King: Which Bed Size Fits Your Bedroom?

One of the most common questions we hear on the showroom floor isn't about firmness or foam — it's “what size should I actually buy?” The right bed size depends on your room dimensions, who's sleeping in it, and how the space needs to function beyond just sleeping. Here's how the main sizes compare.

The Standard Sizes at a Glance

•     Double/Full (54" x 75") — tight for two adults; better suited to a single sleeper, guest room, or a growing child's room.

•     Queen (60" x 80") — the most common size sold, and a reasonable fit for couples in rooms around 10' x 10' or larger.

•     King (76" x 80") — gives each partner roughly the same width as a twin bed on their own side; needs a room closer to 12' x 12' to avoid feeling cramped.

•     California King (72" x 84") — narrower but longer than a standard king, a good choice for taller sleepers or narrower Niagara Region bedrooms that can't fit a full king's width.

Measure Before You Fall in Love With a Size

A king bed looks great in a showroom, but showrooms don't have your closet doors, your dresser, or your walkway to the bathroom. Before deciding on a size:

1.   Measure your bedroom's total width and length, not just the wall where the bed will sit.

2.   Leave at least 24 inches of clearance on each side you'll actually walk through.

3.   Account for other furniture — dresser, nightstands, a bench at the foot of the bed — that needs to coexist with the bed frame.

4.   If you're planning to move the bed up or down stairs, check hallway and stairwell width for larger frames and box springs.

Older Niagara Region Homes vs. Newer Builds

Character homes in St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake often have smaller, more traditionally proportioned bedrooms, where a queen is usually the practical ceiling for comfortable movement around the room. Newer builds in Niagara Falls, Welland, and Fort Erie tend to have larger primary bedrooms that can comfortably handle a king or California king, especially with a lower-profile platform frame that doesn't visually shrink the room.

When a Smaller Bed Is the Smarter Choice

Bigger isn't always better. A queen in a smaller room will feel proportional and leave space for a reading chair or dresser; a king crammed into the same room can make the space feel like it's all bed and nothing else.
